Medium term note

A medium-term note (MTN) is a debt note that usually matures (is paid back) in 5–10 years, but the term may be less than one year or as long as 100 years. They can be issued on a fixed or floating coupon basis. In opposite to conventional bonds, these can be offered continuously through various brokers, instead of issuing the full amount at once. Also, in contrast to conventional bonds market, the agent (typically investment bank) in MTN market is not obliged to underwrite the notes for the issuer and the agent is thus not guaranteed funds. Floating rate medium-term notes can be as simple as paying the holder a coupon linked to Euribor +/- basis points or can be more complex structured notes linked, for example, to swap rates, treasuries, indices, etc. The amount of the issues usually ranges from $100 million to $1 billion. In the recent years, MTNs have become major source of financing in international financial markets, both in US and EU.

Examples of use of medium-term debt
1. The Treasury said reintroduction of the long bond could give the government the ability to borrow across a range of maturities to help prepare for an anticipated maturing of short– and medium–term debt.
2. ABN Amro Holding NV and Morgan Stanley will manage the sale, which is part of Gazprom‘s $15 billion medium–term debt program, Interfax said. (Bloomberg) Power Machines Floatation Turbine maker Power Machines plans to float new shares worth $200 million to $250 million on domestic bourses in late July, a market source told Reuters on Wednesday.
3. Rato warned that there was a «serious risk» of the beneficiaries losing their gains if they borrow more sums on worse terms to finance spending that does not promote growth. «There are already signs of new lenders –– some private, some official –– rushing in now that debt has been reduced. «We can help countries understand the risks of a rapid build–up of debt and design medium–term debt strategies aimed at avoiding unsustainable debt,» he said, noting that the IMF and World Bank are already advising nations on this. «We can also sound the alarm to official creditors when debt or debt service levels are likely to become a problem.
